Devil’s Club Supreme FAQ

We’re always getting calls about Devil’s Club Supreme, asking about how it works, what it is, and how to use it. Here’s a sampling of the types of questions, along with the answers to them.
Is Devil’s Club the same as Devil’s Claw?

No, it isn’t. Devil’s Claw is a completely different type of supplement, with totally different effects. The only similarity between the two is the name.

What’s in Devil’s Club Supreme?

Here’s the list of ingredients, as shown on the label:

Fresh Devil's Club Root Bark, Indian Jambul Seed, Fresh Dandelion Leaf and Root, Uva Ursi Leaf, Fresh Tumeric Root

Grain alcohol content: 45-55%

There seems to be a high concentration of alcohol in Devil’s Club. Do they make an alcohol free version?

No they don’t. As best as we can tell, Devil’s Club requires an alcohol base to be kept in suspension.

Keep in mind that you’re only using 10 drops a day – that doesn’t translate into all that much alcohol. To remove the alcohol, add drops to a small amount of warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes; the alcohol will dissipate.

To be honest, we can’t be completely certain that the alcohol isn’t an important part of what makes the Devil’s Club work for treating insulinomas.

How does Devil’s Club work?

Here’s what it says in the Naturopathic Handbook of Herbal Formulas, Herbal Research Publications, Inc., Revised 3rd Edition:

Therapeutic Actions: [Devil’s Club] acts upon the re-synthesis of glycogen, facilitates in the repair of the isles of langerhan of the pancreas, and promotes better production and utilization of insulin. Since this is a balancing compound, its action is to normalize and restore integrity of the organs and glands associated with carbohydrate and sugar metabolism.

Indications: These herbs are indicated in both hyper- and hypoglycemia. Use as an adjunct to the daily diet for promoting a greater balance of glucose metabolism within the body.

Complementary Compounds: In both hyper- and hypoglycemia it is useful to use this compound along with Compounded Elixir of Bitters, which promotes a greater balance to the digestive functions.

Contra-indications and Cautions: This compound should not be taken during pregnancy and should not necessarily be considered a substitute for insulin therapy.

What’s the proper dosage for using Devil’s Club?

For ferrets, we use 5 drops, twice a day, 12 hours apart. We add it to a 50:50 mixture of A/D and water, slightly warmed. Most ferrets dive right in, and look for more.

What is A/D?

That’s Hills A/D, a prescription cat food, available through most veterinarians.

My ferret won’t eat A/D. Is that the only way he can take Devil’s Club?

No. We use A/D because it’s convenient, and the ferrets seem to like it. The object is to use something the ferret will eat completely, without any difficulty.

Other things you can try are chicken baby food, chicken gravy, or even a little Ferrevite and water, mixed into a soup. Whatever you can get your ferret to take completely, and get all the way down into its stomach should work fine.

You can even mix it with an equal amount of water and syringe it into the ferret’s mouth; but remember, this can stress the ferret, which can cause more problems than it cures.

Can I use Devil’s Club while using other medications?

We’ve used Devil’s Club for our ferrets at the same time as other medications, such as deximethesone and prednisone, without any problem. And we’ve never heard of any interaction problems, from anyone else who’s used it.

However, if you have any questions about using it for your ferrets, you should consult your vet.

Is Devil’s Club only available through the New Rainbow Bridge?

No. You should be able to get it through any good health food store. We order it directly through Gaia Herbs, but it’s probably also available from other herb suppliers.

In fact, we’d just as soon you did get it elsewhere: We lose money on every bottle we sell, due to the time spent on packaging and shipping. We only offer it as a service to the ferret community.
